Karthika Masa Vratham
Karthika masam starts on the day after deepavali (Margashira Amavasya) and ends after 30 days.
Kartik Maas, also known as Damodar Maas.
Kartika masa is the most auspicious and holiest month for Hindus.
Pujas are to be performed for the whole month. Those who cannot perform for 30 days (full month) they can do minimum for 10 days. These 10 (ten) days are "initial starting five days of karthik masam and 5 days before pournima". These 10 days are important days in this month.
As per puranas, there is no sacred month like karthik, there is no God similar to Lord Vishnu, there is no scripture like Vedas and there no river like Ganga.
Karthik month is the favorite month to both of the supreme Gods Lord Vishnu and Lord Siva. Water in rivers, lakes and ponds get holy power to destroy ill effects during the month hence karthik snaan is one of the most popular Hindu rituals.
The main rituals of kartik month are : karthik snan, Pooja of Surya, Pooja of Lord Vishnu and Siva, karthi deepadana, Tulasi pooja, vanbhojan, charity of food and clothes to poor.
Following are excerpts from some scriptures (Puranas) describing the glory of the pious Kartik month:
“If somebody performs even a little worship of Lord Shri Hari in this month, He offers that devotee His own abode.”
“If somebody burns a lamp in the temple of Lord Shri Hari even for a short time (in the month of Kartik), then whatever sins, he has acquired are all destroyed.”
“A person, who for the entire month of Kartik eats only once a day, becomes very famous, powerful and heroic.”
“O Narada! I have personally seen that a person who happily reads the Bhagavad Gita in the month of Kartik does not return to the world of birth and death.”
“Of all gifts, the gift of a lamp during the month of Kartik is the best. No gift is its equal.”
Importance of Karthika masam
To kill and get the Vedas back, Lord Sri Maha Vishnu has incarnated as a fish (Matsya Avatar) and killed the Conch Shell demon and restored the Vedas. It is said that the incarnation of Matsya Avatar has taken place on the 11th day of month kartik.
Lord Vishnu goes to sleep on Ashadha suddha ekadashi and wakes-up on Karthika suddha ekadashi.
Lord Shiva kílled Tripurasuras on Karthika pournami and protected the world.
In this month Ganga (Godess of river Ganges) enters in to all rivers, canals, ponds and wells and makes them as pious as Ganga.
Ayyappa deeksha is also taken in Karthika masam and is continued up to Makara Sankranthi (Jan 15th)
The most important aspect of Karthika masam is hearing Karthika puranam. It is called as Karthika vratham. It normally includes the following rules:
Waking up early in Brahmi muhartham (4.00A.M)
Taking bath in rivers or ponds remembering Ganga
Shiva puja / Damodara (Vishnu) puja
Lighting Akasha deepam on sun-set
Understanding Karthika puranam
Devotees believe that performing or observing fast and pujas during the month of Kartik can bring them salvation (Moksha) after their death.
But this post is intended to give an elaborate description of different worships done in Karthika masam. All of these are not compulsory but if done will give enormous spiritual wealth.

MEANING: He is the remover of intellectual dull-headedness. He is the Lord of the firmament, dispeller of darkness. Master of all the vedas, he is a friend of the waters and causes rain. HE has crossed the vindya range and sports in the Brahma Nadi.

MEANING: Salutations to the Lord who abides in the heart of all beings keeping awake when they are asleep. He is both the sacrificial fire and the fruit enjoyed by the worshippers.

MEANING: The Sun is verily the Lord of all action in this universe. He is verily the vedas, the sacrifices mentioned in them and the fruits obtained by performing the sacrifices.

MEANING: Raghava, one who recites this hymn in times of danger, during an affliction or when lost in the wilderness and having fear, he will not lose heart (and become brave)
